People gather to celebrate NNMC's 40th anniversary

Northern Nevada Medical Center (NNMC) celebrates 40 years of providing nationally recognized quality patient care to the greater Truckee Meadows region. NNMC opened in 1983 as Sparks Family Hospital and since renamed to NNMC in 1994, a facility within the Northern Nevada Health System network of care.

Chief executive officer at NNMC, Helen Lidholm, shares, “We are proud to support the local community and ensure residents have care in their neighborhood. In the past 40 years, we have grown with Sparks and continue to support regional efforts to build a community that is Sparks Proud.”

The hospital has earned national and local recognition, including nine consecutive A-grade Leapfrog Hospital Safety ratings, top-rankings from the American Heart Association® and American Stroke Association®, and accreditation by The Joint Commission for joint and spine care. NNMC was recognized in 2022 as a Five-Star Recipient from Healthgrades for Total Hip Replacement and Spinal Fusion Surgery.

NNMC has also expanded its care across the region to include 24/7 emergency care with the opening of the ER at McCarran Northwest in 2020 and the ER at Spanish Springs in 2023. The freestanding emergency departments offer diagnostic imaging, lab services, and care from board-certified physicians and emergency-trained nurses. In addition, NNMC has plans to open a new multi-specialty center offering adult behavioral health services and inpatient rehabilitation. The new facility, located in northwest Reno, is set to begin opening early 2024.

“NNMC has continued to show its commitment to safe patient care, and I am proud of the steps they have taken to expand services, invest in advanced technology, and recruit some of the brightest clinical providers in our region,” said Travis Kieckbusch, MD chief of staff at NNMC. “As a physician leader, I work closely with hospital staff to implement best practices with a focus on quality patient outcomes.”

In 2022, NNMC admitted more than 5,000 patients, cared for more than 37,000 emergency department visits and performed more than 7,500 surgical cases. With more than 900 employees, NNMC distributed more than $72 Million in salaries and benefits and contributed more than $31 Million in capital improvements.
