What Is Sports Medicine?
Sports medicine is a specialty that covers the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries caused by sports and exercise related activities. The focus of sports medicine is to help patients make a full recovery so that they are able to resume their sports activities.
Our Focus
Northern Nevada Sports Medicine focuses on nonsurgical treatments of sports injuries, including:
- Acute joint injuries (ankle, knee, shoulder, wrist and elbow)
- Muscle strains
- Overuse injuries
- Tendonitis
- Stress fractures
Among the other services we provide are:
- Managing head injuries and concussions
- Work with athletes who have chronic or acute
- illness, such as mononucleosis, asthma or diabetes
- Managing performance issues
- Develop exercise programs
- Injury prevention
- Strength training and conditioning recommendations
- “Return to play” decisions in the sick or injured athlete
Approximately 90 percent of all sports injuries do not require surgical treatment but if your injury does, we will make a quick referral to the orthopaedic specialist who is best for you.
Orthopaedics
Orthopaedics is the branch of medicine that deals with disorders of the bones, joints, muscles, connective tissue and other related structures including ligaments and cartilage. Orthopaedic surgeons at Northern Nevada Medical Center are dedicated to patient service in the broad disciplines of traumatic injury treatment, adult reconstruction, joint replacement, spine surgery, foot and ankle surgery as well as hand, shoulder and elbow surgery.
Physiatrists
Physiatrists take a multidisciplinary approach to healing. These physicians handle injuries that require rehabilitation but not surgery..

Sport Psychologists
Sport psychologists work with coaches and athletes to help improve athletic motivation and performance.
