Northern Nevada Medical Center is the first hospital in northern Nevada to receive The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ in Orthopedics: Knee Replacement, Orthopedics: Hip Replacement and Spine Surgery. NNMC is also certified by The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center and is an Accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society for Chest Pain Centers. Northern Nevada Medical Center is the only hospital in Nevada with all five of these quality distinctions.
The Accredited Chest Pain Center at NNMC
The Chest Pain Center at Northern Nevada Medical Center is accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) for its ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack.
As an Accredited Chest Pain Center, the hospital has demonstrated that effective processes are in place to:
- Reduce the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment
- Treat patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the wholeness of the heart muscle can be preserved
- Monitor patients when it is not certain that they are having a heart attack to ensure that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital

Inpatient Rehab Center
The Inpatient Rehab Center at Northern Nevada Medical Center was recently recognized with a 2014 Top Performer Award by Uniform Data System.
This is the third year the program has ranked among the top 10 percent of acute rehabilitation facilities nationally out of more than 750. NNMC ranked in the top 10 percent for the following indicators:
- Percentage of patients who are discharged to their residences
- Functional level of patients
- Overall length of stay at the hospital

Pain Management Center
Northern Nevada Medical Center's pain management program recently earned the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval in Low Back Pain. The program is the first in the nation to receive this certification.
This certification recognizes NNMC's dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission's state-of-the-art standards. To achieve this prestigious certification, the hospital underwent a rigorous on-site evaluation by The Joint Commission. NNMC earned certification by providing compliance with nationally developed standards including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management.
Primary Stroke Center
When a stroke occurs, mere minutes can mean the difference between life, recovery and long-term complications. The Primary Stroke Center at NNMC has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™. With this advanced certification, Northern Nevada Medical Center has demonstrated that it provides the next generation of stroke care and has proven compliance with nationally developed standards for stroke care. The dedicated Stroke Response Team is trained to assess each patient to determine if they have had a stroke and to begin appropriate treatment options.
Reducing Healthcare-Associated Infections
NNMC was honored by the Nevada Hospital Association (NHA) for its efforts to improve patient safety by reducing or eliminating healthcare-associated infections. NNMC was the only hospital of the 18 Nevada hospitals who participated in the NHA's program to receive four separate awards.
The program focused on three evidence based procedures:
- Proper catheter insertion practices
- Care and removal of catheters
- Reduction in use of indwelling catheters
NNMC's Medical Telemetry Unit and ICU were recognized for reducing catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The Medical Telemetry Unit was also recognized for reducing the use of catheters and the Medical Surgical Unit was honored for its record of zero catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
NNMC’s Spine Center of Excellence is the only program in northern Nevada to earn The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ in Spine Surgery. This certification recognizes NNMC’s commitment to the highest level of care for its back and neck surgery patients. Certification demonstrates dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards including medication management and infection prevention and control.

NNMC has been recognized as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® for 2014 by The Joint Commission for attaining and sustaining excellence in accountability measure performance for heart attack, stroke, pneumonia, immunizations and surgical care.
In order to receive this recognition, NNMC had to meet three performance based criteria:
- Achieve cumulative performance of 95 percent or higher across all reported accountability measures
- Achieve performance of 95 percent or higher on every reported accountability measure where there are at least 30 cases
- Have at least one core measure set that has a composite rate of 95 percent or higher and all applicable individual accountability measure have a performance rate of 95 percent or higher
This is the third year NNMC has been recognized as a Top Performer. Last year, NNMC was recognized for its performance on accountability measure data for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care.
The Wound Care Center at Northern Nevada Medical Center recently received the Center of Distinction Award for Quality Patient Care and for the second consecutive year, the Center of Excellence Award.
Healogics Inc. has recognized NNMC for the following outstanding patient outcomes in 2013:
- More than 92 percent patient satisfaction
- 91 percent wound healing rate
- 30 median days to heal
The NNMC Wound Care Center has also been named a Healogics Robert A. Warriner III, MD, Center of Excellence. This award is reserved for centers that achieve two or more consecutive Center of Distinction awards.
The NNMC Would Care Center introduced the region’s first physician-supervised hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a technology that has a nearly 90 percent effectiveness in treatment of hypoxic wounds and necrotizing soft tissue infections. With this specialized service, Northern Nevada Medical Center has been able to heal patients in our community who might otherwise have experienced an amputation or other life-threatening condition.
