Northern Nevada Medical Center (NNMC) is expanding its footprint in Sparks to meet the demand for accessible healthcare. The hospital held a groundbreaking today for its second freestanding emergency department (FED) in Spanish Springs. The 10,600 square-foot facility, ER at Spanish Springs, will be located off Pyramid Way and Oppio Ranch Parkway and intends to open in early fall 2022.

“The Sparks area is rapidly growing and we want to ensure residents have access to convenient, high quality care,” said Helen Lidholm, CEO of Northern Nevada Medical Center. “The new facility will deliver care closer to home, and through board-certified physicians and skilled nursing staff, we will treat patients similarly to that of a hospital emergency department.”

The ER at Spanish Springs will be the second freestanding emergency medical care center that the health system has introduced to the market. The first location, ER at McCarran NW, celebrated its one-year anniversary in August.

“It is important that we continue meeting the needs of our patients through better access to emergency care,” said Travis Anderson, MD and ER Medical Director at Northern Nevada Medical Center and FED locations. “We have seen success at our first FED location and know the growing population in Sparks will welcome the new facility to their neighborhood.”

Similar to a hospital emergency department, the FED will operate 24/7 and treat a variety of emergency medical needs including chest pain, broken bones, minor lacerations, asthma, allergic reactions, flu and other ailments. The facility is staffed with emergency-trained physicians and nurses, as well as lab and imaging techs. If a patient requires a higher level of care, NNMC will work with REMSA Health and local EMS agencies to transport patients to an appropriate hospital or care facility.

The FED will feature multiple treatment rooms, including fast-track exam rooms designed to efficiently triage low severity patients. Also offered at the FED is imaging services including CT, X-ray, and ultrasound and lab draws.
